BoKlok

In the mid 1990s, there was a desperate need for housing in Sweden. In response, Skanska teamed up with IKEA to develop BoKlok. Their goal was to give more people a chance to live in a new home. And their solution was to lower housing costs by building houses in a smarter way—without compromising on quality and character.

This unique housing concept has already fulfilled many people’s dreams of a better living at a reasonable price. During the last year, almost 500 families moved to new BoKlok apartments.

A better living
Each BoKlok project has a traditional village atmosphere. The neighborhood often includes four or five houses, seven at the most, and each block has an inner courtyard with fruit trees and a garden. There is no traffic between the houses, but parking lots are within walking distance.

The apartments are efficiently designed with all the necessary functions included. They are also easy to furnish and IKEA offers a number of helpful suggestions. The open floor plans, high ceilings and big windows give a feeling of space and roominess to the compact apartments. Plus, each apartment has a private balcony or a veranda.

As interest in BoKlok has spread throughout Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark, six products have been developed according to the BoKlok concept. All are two floor buildings with five or six apartments characterized by Scandinavian design.

Value for money
The price and housing costs are based on an analysis of the target group’s ability to pay. In addition, all customers are offered loans with a low interest rate from a financial partner. The concept also includes help from IKEA’s interior design consultants and a voucher to buy new IKEA furniture.

In Swedish, BoKlok means “smart living”. When building a BoKlok house, all aspects of the construction process are done in a slightly smarter way. The houses are prefabricated in a factory, making them easy to assemble at the site. This cost-savings combined with rational production and high volumes is what makes it possible for so many people to afford a BoKlok apartment.
